Who Are Go Go Skank?

Spencer Hawes, Go Go Skank

Spence on the Bass

In a previous life, our moustacheoed frontman and bassist, Spencer played 60’s/70’s funk for Plucky Purcell based in Bath. These days, he’s to be found storming the pub quiz at The Ship in Porthleven, or saving unsuspecting visitors from his partner’s wild goose.

For Go Go Skank, he’s moved on a decade. Whether you smuggled cider into discos in the 80’s, your parents had their first smooch to Careless Whisper, or you’ve only recently discovered the joys of shoulder pads, big hair and synth breaks, he’ll make sure you’re up and dancing.

Matt on Guitar

We put out a call and Rev Matt Le Skank answered his vocation…. Hailing from Falmouth, Matt is equally at home with skanky chops, blistering blues, rockabilly hoe-downs and even chilled out, meandering jazzy madness. Perfect for a band who love to mash it all up.  He doesn’t just love playing with us, he “really really hates it!”.
Plus he has an almost scary level of recall of 80’s pop!

Dom on Drums

He plays drums, he teaches drums, he carries a lot of drums around in his funky van. Having held the beat for the likes of Ska’d for Life and Ten Bob Notes, Dom is now the man in charge of keeping Go Go Skank in line – no mean feat at times. He’s also our sound guru. See if you can spot him smoothly operating the mixing desk with his drum sticks in between beats….

Samphire Sax

As soon as she escaped the convent school, Sam exchanged her classical training for the deep, dark growl of the Tenor Sax and some jazzy flute in lighter moments. Inspired by Lisa Simpson, Sam’s bleeding gums are supported by the massive breath she developed as a UK Team Freediver. Sam came to Go Go Skank via Penzance’s Backroom Blues and the Falmouth Soul Sensation.

Simon on Trumpet

If you’ve spotted Simon in the gym, you’ll have noticed he’s a powerful chap. Whilst we are very grateful for those guns when shifting gear, it’s the power of his trumpet and enthusiasm for the tunes that we really love. Enjoy his epic solos and listen out for his Flugel and Trombone when the moment calls for it.
